Army photographer's last image shows risks of documenting mission

A mortar tube accidentally explodes on July 2, 2013, during a live-fire training exercise with the Afghan National Army. The accident killed four ANA soldiers, as well as U.S. Army Spc. Hilda Clayton, an Army photographer who took this photo. Photo by Spc. Hilda Clayton/U.S. Army

The last photo taken by an Army combat photographer just a fraction of a second before her death illuminates the dangers of the little-known mission to document military action on the ground for planning and public relations purposes.

Combat photographers may take as many risks as their fellow soldiers. Many civilian journalists have been killed documenting conflicts, from Ernie Pyle in Okinawa during World War II to Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington in Libya.

Army combat cameraman Spc. Hilda Clayton, whose final image was released by the Pentagon on Monday, was part of the military's Combat Camera operation. The photo depicts the explosion that killed her on assignment on July 2, 2013.

A bestselling novel aimed at teen

While the series may open important lines of communication between children and parents, experts say it also has the potential to increase risk for 'suicide contagion and copycats.'
It started as a bestselling novel aimed at teens.

In 2007, Thirteen Reasons Why, by first-time novelist Jay Asher, outlined the story of a 16-year-old named Hannah Baker. In the book, Hannah recounts -- from beyond the grave -- the high school gossip, humiliation, bullying, invasion of privacy, betrayal and sexual assault that led her to suicide.

In the spring of 2017, "13 Reasons Why" became an even more popular 13-episode series on Netflix.

North Korea demands South suspend joint military drills

North Korea issued a statement of warning to the South on Thursday, local time, demanding an end to military drills with the United States

North Korea accused the South of engaging in "military hostilities" and demanded Seoul put an immediate end to what it described as a threat at its border.

The statement critical of Seoul's policies comes at a time when millions of South Koreans are headed to the polls to elect a new president.

Pyongyang's propaganda outlet Uriminzokkiri issued the message on Thursday, local time, charging South Korea's caretaker government with "following the United States, while denying a unitary [Korean] people."

Arkansas' State of Emergency

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said authorities have evacuated more than 500 people due to flooding after nine levees were breached, including in Pocahontas.

The governor declared a state of emergency Monday after more than a week of severe storms, flooding and tornadoes. The recent weather has killed seven people, Hutchinson said. One child is missing.

On Wednesday, Hutchinson said he deployed additional National Guard resources, including personnel and vehicles, to aid in search, rescue and recovery efforts in northeast Arkansas. Pocahontas, which is in Randolph County, had its Black River levee breached Wednesday morning.
